Every Monday from 6-9 p.m., the High River Tennis Club offers free games of tennis, with equipment provided, to the public.
“If you’re thinking of becoming a member but haven’t picked up a racket for a while, you can try it out before you get a membership,” said MJ Getkate, the club’s treasurer.
The club, which has about 100 members, has been offering a free tennis evening to the public for the past five years.
“It’s a way we like to give back to the community.”
The club, located in in southeast High River, along Monterey Drive, also offers lessons from a professional for anyone aged five to adult, with the summer lessons having just begun.
Tennis is a great way to take part in an active, inexpensive sport in the community, Getkate said.
“I enjoy the challenge, and I’m always trying to better my game.”
A lot of members are involved in other sports and wellness activities, and use tennis to supplement them, said Getkate.
“It’s a great game,” she said about tennis. “It promotes health and wellness, and it’s a game you can play for life.”
The tennis club is a great way to meet people in the community with common interests and common goals, said Getkate.
“It’s nice to meet other people that have a love for the game, and it’s a good game for all ages.”
Getkate has been involved in tennis since she was six years old, and her father, 84, is still involved with tennis.
For those looking to get involved, Getkate suggested checking out the High River Tennis Club Facebook page or joining them for a free game of tennis on a Monday.
