The Foothills Flyers Midget 1 hockey team is off to the Tier 2 Central Alberta Hockey League (CAHL) Championship.

The #2 Flyers beat #3 Innisfail 2-0 in the best-of-three semi-finals matchup.

The Flyers won both games quite handily.

In Game 1 at the Blackie Community Arena on Mar. 2, the Flyers perhaps started a little slow on the defensive side of the ice, but they were also able to score two and the game was tied 2-2 going into the second period. Foothills took off from there and there was no coming back for the Innisfail team. The Flyers scored three straight in the second, while Innisfail closed out the period with one.

The third period saw more firepower from the Flyers as they scored two more and won the game 7-3.

It was an all-around team effort as 10 players reached the scoresheet. Three players finished with two points (Gunnar Atkinson 2 goals, Noah Lake 1 goal, 1 assist, Jace Sanguine 2 assists) and Flyers finished with three points (Damen Mercier and Alexander L. Smith both scored a goal and had two helpers).

Ty Poole made 29 saves for the win.

Game 3 in Innisfail on Mar. 3, saw the same high scoring power from the Flyers as they won 8-2 and closed out the series.

10 Flyers once again reached the scoresheet with Mercier (2 goals), Ben Penney and Bridger Atkinson (both 1 goal and 1 assist) leading the charge.

Andrew L. Smith got the win in this game making 32 saves.

Foothills coach Cory Atkinson was very pleased with his team’s effort in the series.

“Our boys have continued to improve all season long and are playing the best they have all season. It was good to see,” he said.

Foothills will now move on to face #1 seed Medicine or #4 Airdrie. The #2 seeded Flyers lost two close games to Medicine Hat this season and beat Airdrie twice.

“The way the boys are playing right now as a team and as a group, they have really come together, I think it’s going to be a really good series whoever we play,” said Atkinson.

“I think that if they play how they can as a team I think we should do alright.”

The Finals is yet to be decided as Airdrie and Medicine Hat will play game #2 of their best-of-three semi-finals on Mar. 9.

The Flyers will face the winner of that series.
