The 1st Annual Teddy Bear Toss game for the High River Flyers of the Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL) was a success even though the Flyers lost 7-5 in a high scoring affair with their rivals the Medicine Hat Cubs.
The game was played at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex on Dec. 14 in front of a packed rink holding teddy bears that they would throw on to the ice as soon as the Flyers scored their first goal.
The Flyers looked a little nervous out of the gate and went down quickly 3-0 halfway through the first, and it seemed that the team might not score before the period ended, but Captain Michael McTighe scored with a 1:21 seconds left in the first with assists from Tyler Alger and Sean Burns.
The crowd then threw their teddy bears either at the protective mesh or those who had a good throw, threw it over the mesh and on to the ice. High River minor hockey players grabbed the teddy bears that didn’t make it onto the ice and placed them inside the rink.
