High River Gift of Music is bringing a unique, live music concert to the area.
Luminous Voices of Calgary will be performing in a new and unique way; through an inventive concert format which combines the old-school charm of a drive-in theatre with new technology and live performance.
In a season with considerable limitations for the performing arts, audience members can enjoy the live music of Luminous Voices from the safety and privacy of their own vehicles.
“Our Car Choir project has been a tremendous success by providing a way for us to perform live, in-person and together. But, more importantly, it has allowed us to share our music with a live audience, rather than through our computers or televisions at home.” says Luminous Voices’ Artistic Director Timothy Shantz.
“This initiative is novel, unique and a heck of a lot of fun.”
Luminous Voices, established in 2012 by conductor and Artistic Director Timothy Shantz, is an exceptional choral ensemble becoming known for their willingness to experiment with format and material. Their Wild Sun of Winter event will warm a winter evening by taking us on a musical adventure through darkness and towards light and optimism.
“So many people deeply miss being able to connect through live music,” says Michèle Wheatley-Brown, Artistic Director for the High River Gift of Music.
She got the idea of bringing this unique concert to High River when she saw Luminous Voices (the professional chamber choir) Christmas car concert in Calgary.
“It was absolutely fabulous,” said Wheatley-Brown.
“There was an immediate connection with the choir and conductor even through the car radio. The sound was spine-tingling – plus you got to enjoy a concert in the warmth and privacy of your vehicle. It was like being in your own private sound booth. I enjoyed so much ‘going out’ to an event – didn’t realize how much I truly missed that.”
“We are so thrilled to offer this to High River and are going to be adding a visual element with a camera crew filming the conductor and singers which will be projected on to a big screen.”
The Car Concert uses FM radio signals which let the members of Luminous Voices sing on a mic protected by the bubble of their own car, while the audience can drive up and enjoy the concert broadcast directly into their car through an unused FM signal. The Car Choir uses a few simple tools – microphones, a mixer, and a very simple and small FM transmitter. This allows the singers’ voices to be broadcast back into their cars through the radio so they can sing and “be” together. As the choir sings, they will be filmed and projected to a large screen for the audience to view completing the concert experience.
Luminous Voices performs their Wild Sun of Winter Car Concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2021, in the parking lot of Ecole Secondaire Highwood High School in High River.
The Town of High River supported the concert by giving $6,000 to the High River Gift of Music. The money came from the Community Vitality Fund.
This event falls into the category of activities permitted by Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Government.
