If you found yourself walking through High River’s downtown core on Thursday morning you may have noticed an abundance of red t-shirts, which read “support the cause.” Western Financial employees sported these t-shirts as they walked to raise money for the Western Communities Foundation.
On Wednesday, May 29, 2013, Western Financial Group’s approximately 1,600 employees will take to the road at 10 a.m. in more than 100 locations across Western Canada to walk 5 km to raise money for community projects, bursaries, public health and more through Support The Cause Day. This year will mark the ninth edition of Western’s Support The Cause Day walk, which has raised more than $426,000 over the years for the Western Communities Foundation.
“The Western Communities Foundation is registered as a charity under the Canada Income Tax Act, which aims to do things in the community that are served by Western Financial Group offices. Bursaries, community initiative grants and infrastructure grants are just a few things that we help fund,” Don Tannas, former employee and founding executive director of Western Communities Foundation who is now retired said.
This is the ninth year the walk has taken place and High River had their walk on Thursday because of the rain on Wednesday. Each employee who participates in the walk is given $50 by Western Financial to go towards the foundation.
“People can also make donations out of the goodness of their own hearts and we are on target to raise more than $130,000, which is a new record for the company. Last year we raised $90,000,” Eric Michalko of Western Financial Group said.
The sidewalks quickly filled up on Thursday morning as the number of employees from Western Financial Group flooded downtown. This is a great event that has been very succesfull in the past and the employees at Western Financial keep setting the bar higher.
“Another big organization we support is “Support for vision care Canada,” Tannas said. “Eye care specialists from our communities go to third world countries to assist. They pay their own way as well as cost of living. We will supply $500 for each member for supplies and equipment.”
Canadian curler Kevin Koe has sponsorship from Western Financial Group and walked to show his support and believes that it’s a great event and the funding goes to great causes.
“All of the money raised goes right back into the communities that Western Financial serves. We reinvest the money back into the communities,” Michalko said.
The annual Support The Cause Day is a great way for Western Financial Group employees to get involved and see how their hard work pays off for the community.
