Article content

There is a history of improv at Highwood high school and drama teacher Libbie d’Esterre wants to add to it. Students from 9 to twelve can come to the participate in the Improv group held in the drama room at Highwood high school. Afterschool on Wednesdays 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. is when the group gets together and as d’Esterre says, “plays.”

The improv group is open to anyone wanting to have fun and participate in fun scenarios through acting. You do not have to be in any drama at all, d’Esterre said she has one student who is now in his 20s that comes back and helps out.

“Improv is great, often kids who start out being very shy end up being the loudest ones in the room,” said d’Esterre.

In March the participants who wish to take improv to the next level are selected to be in a group that will compete in the high school theatre sports which is held at Loose Moose Theatre.

“It gives kids a chance to play. It gives kids a chance to laugh and more importantly gives kids a chance to belong to something. That is important,” said d’Esterre.

The group is made up of band members, football players, artists, wrestlers and more.

Kids are encouraged to just show up.

The group starts in the middle of October. every year and goes up until March. d’Esterre said if anyone in the community would like to be involved and participate, they can contact her at 403-652-5500.

A date has not been confirmed yet but d’Esterre and the improv club will be hosting a night at the improv.

“Being involved in a club like this gives kids confidence, whether they need to talk to mom or dad or apply for a job, being confident is great,” said d’Esterre.
